More about
Paige (Vanessa McCaffrey), a socialite who does
"nothing" but provide "flowers for the homeless" is throwing a dinner
party for her husband Lars (PJ King), a successful
stockbroker-turned-lifestyle guru, to celebrate his latest book, a
pretentious guide on the psychological apocalypse - an insight into
what he calls the psyche-drive. She tells him, “I know this meal’s
about your amazing brilliant success and everything, Lars, but it’s my
statement. It’s my creation – like Frankenstein’s monster.”
For this special evening she has meticulously
planned a menu including algae soup which has been cooking outside for
three weeks until the green slime formed. Paige points out that "the
great thing about this dish is that the leftovers breed, so you never
run out." The main course is live lobster which the guests have to
decide whether to release into the garden pond or put screaming into a
boiling pot. Dessert is the contents of her trashcan - with sugar
added, then frozen.
She has invited some carefully chosen
representatives of Britain's intellectual elite. There's Wynne (Tammy
Shanley), a visual artist/eroticist - and Lar's mistress - who spreads
her veggie, hippy free love philosophy everywhere. Her boyfriend, a
member of parliament, is unable to come as he's just dumped her and
run off with his secretary. The electronic media is represented by
sexpot newsreader and trophy wife Sian (Melody Moore) who lets drink
get the better of her and aires her marital problems over dinner. The
sciences are represented by Sian's new husband microbiologist and
genial loser Hal (Wayne Dapser), an old friend, who left his ex-wife
suicidal when he abandoned her for younger flesh.
Completing the party is working-class Mike
(Ross Pipkin) who crashes his van and comes inside to ask for help
then informs them that he has just robbed the house next door. They
are served by a sinister and silent waiter (Tony Konrath) who receives
$25,000 cash for his services, raising suspicions about what those
services will be.
At the heart of the party is Paige whose barbs
are driven by a sense of morality that the others lack. She finds a
like-minded person in van driver Mike who is aware that something more
profound than a social gathering is occurring. He condemns all of the
guests initially, disgusted by their attitudes, but proves more than
able to argue on the same level as the 'intellectuals' that surround
him. He seems to be the only appreciative guest at the table.
As things slowly unravel, Paige exasperates them all
with verbal dinner games designed to showcase the shallowness of each
person. Come and see what other surprises she has in store for her
guests as the waiter helps bring about her carefully planned
denouement.
